How our rankings work

The Top 10 is ranked using a Bayesian method, the same type of statistical weighting used by platforms such as IMDb for their rankings.

Rather than looking only at a kiosk’s average rating, we also take into account how many people have voted. A kiosk with many votes will have its own rating play a major role in its ranking. A kiosk with only a few votes, on the other hand, is gently weighted towards the average rating of all kiosks on the TBR Map. This prevents a single unusually high or low rating from having a disproportionate impact.

How many votes are needed for a kiosk’s own rating to have a strong influence is determined statistically, based on how votes on the TBR Map are typically distributed across kiosks. This value is recalculated automatically every time the rankings are updated.

The method is used for Top 10, our regional rankings, and our seven category rankings, such as best sausage and best mashed potatoes.

Each kiosk’s weighted rating (WR) is calculated as follows:

WR = (v / (v + m)) × R + (m / (v + m)) × C

Where:

R = the kiosk’s own average rating
v = the number of votes the kiosk has received
C = the average rating for all kiosks on the TBR Map
m = the threshold for “enough votes”

The value of m is automatically recalculated with each update, based on how votes are distributed across the kiosks on the TBR Map. We therefore do not specify a fixed value here, as it changes as more visitors cast their votes.

In practice, this means that the more votes a kiosk receives, the greater the influence of its own average rating. With fewer votes, the overall average has a greater influence.
